Project Management: Managing a Slate of Projects

Abstract:

The University of Memphis has built and has been using a Project Inventory system that enables a number of project slate management functions to take place. The tutorial will cover the basics of project management issues from the perspective of having to manage MANY projects and how some clear thinking and basic tools can assist the process. The format will be a combination of a discussion of Project Management ideas, actual on-line access to the University of Memphis project management site; and a demonstration to show each of the ideas in practice. The tutorial will cover progress, disappointments, the basic lessons learned, and plans for future development. The software developed by the University of Memphis will be given to all interested tutorial participants without additional charge.

The basic concept of this tutorial is a practical means of dealing with competing resources (of all kinds) for projects of varying priority while aligning the projects to our goals and objectives.

Who Should Attend?
This tutorial will be beneficial to any person having responsibility for managing either single projects or multiple projects. Anyone interested in the concepts and management tools available for managing projects and slates of projects.
Tutorial Highlights:
Participants will learn the reasons why technology projects fail and how to avoid these pitfalls. They will be introduced to a process used in creating project plans and given workable ideas on preparing an organization to manage multiple projects. The presentation will include on-line access to The University of Memphis' Project Inventory Website and complete demonstrations on how this site is used to help manage the large number of projects at University of Memphis.
