Optional Wine
and Agriculture Tour in the Salinas Valley exclusively for
CSMS 2003 Attendees
Because CSMS 2003 will end at Noon on Tuesday, April 1, and many of you will not
be taking flights home until the next morning, we have arranged with a local
company to offer a special tour of wineries and vineyards in the fertile
Salinas Valley, not far from Monterey. The tour will also include discussion
of the enormous fruit and vegetable crops in that valley, which provides
produce to the entire country. It will be the time of the first big crops
of the season, including lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, and strawberries.
The tour van will load at the Double Tree Hotel at 1:00 PM that afternoon, and
will return to the hotel at approximately 5:30 PM. That should give you plenty
of time to have a relaxing dinner, or to drive or take airport transportation
to the San Jose or San Francisco airport in order to stay overnight there and
catch an early plane on Wednesday morning.
The tour will include a picnic lunch, wine tasting at two wineries (Ventana
Vineyards and Cloninger), a tour of one of the wineries and a vineyard walk,
and views of and information about the produce fields along the way. The
cost is $65.00 per person, payable at the time of the tour.
Transportation will be provided via a large van, which has a maximum seating
capacity of 12 passengers (plus the driver/tour guide, of course). Because
of the limited number of seats, it will be first come, first serve. We will
take names for a wait list, however, in case someone who makes an early
reservation has to cancel for some reason.
If you would like to participate in this unique opportunity, send an e-mail
message requesting a seat (or seats) to Jack Esbin at jesbin@acm.org. Jack
will confirm your reservation or place on the wait list via a reply.
